Follow less conventional paths: To have an usual career or achieve things in an unusual way, compared to most ordinary people.

Move horizontally: To change to another job on the same level rather than up or down.

Grow into your role: To become better at the job you do, so that you feel more confident and satisfied.

Reach a stage where…: To develop so that you are in a particular state or period of your life.

Broaden your horizons: To increase your experience and knowledge.

Go beyond the scope of your job: To do things outside the range of things that an organization. An activity etc includes or allows.

Take a step backwards: To return to lower level or to an activity that you did in the past.

Put yourself in a better position: To improve your situation so it is easier for you to do something.

Phrasal verbs

Stand up for: to support or defend somebody or something.

Stick up for: to support or defend somebody who’s been criticized.

Stay ahead of: to always be prepared to deal with something or somebody because you know what is likely to happen.

Get on with: to continue with something, especially after an interruption.

Stand out from: To be easily noticed because something/somebody is different or special.

Cling on to: To manage to keep something by trying very hard.

Come up with: To think of an idea or an answer.

Keep in with: To make sure that you stay friendly with somebody, because they can give you an advantage.

Hold on to: To keep something that is an advantage for yourself.

Look out for: to try to notice something.

Move on to: To change or progress to another activity, subject of conversation etc.

Stand up to: To be able to be treated in a particular way and still stay good or correct.
